RR -- Small Fandoms

Even though we already have a couple of small fandom RR posts, they're several months old and I'm hoping a fresh one will spark new recs.   Remember, any fandom (no matter how large it is in the world at large) is counted as small at ER if there are fewer than five recs posted for that fandom in this comm.  This means, for example, Star Wars, individual Star Trek franchises, The X-Files, and Supernatural all count as small fandoms while Jeeves & Wooster and Sports Night do not.  Check out our tags page or our delicious account to see which fandoms are eligible.  (When in doubt, feel free to rec -- we won't complain.)

Personally, I'm really looking forward to a bunch of reasons why Star Wars and Star Trek TOS should be getting more recs.  And if anyone has some 'Sam and Dean really aren't brothers and thus them getting together isn't really incest at all' recs, I will love you forever:)

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

Today's Topic: Small Fandoms

i'm not sure how many mag7 recs you've managed thus far, but i'm taking the opportunity to present 'My Name is Legion', by Sarah B.

it's 1009k, broken up into several parts, so it's unsurprising that every so often there's a formatting error in the text - but it's far less often than one might suppose in a giant this size, and doesn't interfere with the readability at all.

there's no summary on the index page, but it was brought up in response to a request for fics where Chris beats up JD; in my not so humble opinion, this story deals effectively and realistically with the potential outcomes of such an episode, and manages to keep your interest the whole way.

the link to the index page (it's divided into 3 parts of 3, 8, and 19 chapters respectively) is:

happy reading!

Wow. Wow! Thank you! (Out of curiosity, is it gen/slash/het? And if there is a pairing, what pairing is it?)

I would love to push Live Free or Die Hard out of small fandoms all on my own! ;-)

Title: The Walking Wounded
Author: Kate Andrews (svilleficrecs)
Fandom: Live Free or Die Hard
Pairing: John/Matt
Summary: Matt is obsessing on John's wounds and scars.
Link: The Walking Wounded (2nd part linked at the bottom of the first)

Review: The first Die Hard 4 fic I ever read, and still one of my favorites. Matt's brain just won't stop thinking him into circles, and John is just as low-key and practical as you'd expect. Really interesting exploration of the perverse nature of kinks, and how real life can pop you out of the weird headspaces you can get yourself into.

Title: Die Hard 4.5 : I'll Be Hard for Christmas
Author: Aja (bookshop)
Fandom: Live Free or Die Hard
Pairing: John/Matt
Summary: Like the above fic, takes place post-fire sale and during the Congressional hearings.
Link: Die Hard 4.5 : I'll Be Hard for Christmas

Review: Written for Yuletide 2008, this fic is everything you could hope for in gruff John snarkitude, endearingly flaily Matt, and their unlikely romance. Bonus fabulous OC in the aide they are assigned in DC, and a gleefully happy ending for nerdly political junkies (if you aren't one, google Nate Silver for the in-joke).

Title: Pretty Little Death Song: 5 Ways Matt Farrell Died
Author: Salieri (troyswann)
Fandom: Live Free or Die Hard
Pairing: John/Matt
Summary: "It's a metaphor. Really." Matt's adventures don't end after the fire sale, so John's don't either.
Link: Pretty Little Death Song: 5 Ways Matt Farrell Died

Review: Salieri is one of the best writers in any fandom, and every fandom she turns her hand to. Her characterizations are spot on, and her metaphors are beautiful, while at the same time illustrating what's going on far more perfectly than straight prose. I'm so glad she's writing DH4!

Jan. 19th, 2009 06:38 pm (UTC)
Hey, you can rec DH4 fic to me *any* time:)

(Also, I have at least one DH4 rec already written up, possibly more... Too many recs, not enough time!)

I know you've already recced a Merlin fic for this yourself but it was the first fandom I thought of when I saw the post and it still counts with your criteria of 5 recs or less. So I've pulled a couple of my favorites together...

Title: I'll Be In the Platform Shoes
Author: raphaela667
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur
Summary: (AU) In which Merlin is the most harangued PA in Westminister, Arthur is on the back of the backbench, Uther harasses Merlin (though the Queen never does), Morgana is very clever, and the datebook will take its revenge.

Title: The Epic Tale of Three Dubiously Wise Men
Author: lou_angel and hils
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur
Summary: Crack!fic crossover with Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. It all started with a comment Anhora looked a bit like Gandalf and/or Dumbledore and descended into madness from there.
-- Sequel: The Epic Tale of What's Under Arthur's Bed
-- Summary: With only slightly less crack and a lot more porn.

Title: In the Stars We Trust
Author: allira_dream
Characters: Merlin, Arthur, Gwen, Morgana. Rowena Ravenclaw, Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Helga Hufflepuff.
Summary: (Crossover w/ Harry Potter, Founder's Era) Merlin has to help a druid woman's vision come true, since it will involve the future of all magic as well.

And I'll probably come back with others later...

Okay, my favorite epic fic ever has got to be The Series by irisbleufic. The fandom is Toy Soldiers which came out in 1991 and stars a young Sean Astin and Wil Wheaton. *points at icon* That's them.

The Series covers a couple years before the movie and then post-movie, and has beautiful and brilliant foreshadowing (the movie...well, if you want spoilers you can look at the ship_manifesto essay).

Basically, the story is of two boys in a boarding school moving from friendship to romance, with their own trials and tribulations along the way. A supporting cast of friends add in humor and secondary relationships, but the romance is central. The prose is lyrical and heavy on foreshadowing and the implicated-but-unsaid style. Length wise, this is epic. It covers 21 chapters, many with multiple parts (one has five parts).

Stereotypical is the first chapter, all chapters linked, or were last time I checked...And I've re-read this series many times.
Jan. 19th, 2009 07:53 pm (UTC)
Ooo, intriguing! I actually adore the novel that Toy Soldiers was based on (to the point where I can't bring myself to watch the movie, because I know there were a lot of changes) and I'm always in favor of epic romances. My only question is, is the series complete?

Here is a supernatural fic:

Melting Verse - Dean/Castiel. It's what happens when Castiel rediscovers emotions and feelings he lost when he left Earth 2000 years ago. Dark at times, some Dub-con and Angel/Demon non-con mentioned. One hell of a writer, one hell of a story!

http://strangeandcharm.livejournal.com/tag/melting+verse Starts with Melting and every story is linked after that in sequence. Great read over 80,000 words.

Not sure how you feel about self recs. I have a few rare fics myself that get no play because of their fandom. People tell me they were well written.
Jan. 19th, 2009 08:07 pm (UTC)
Thank you! It's nice to see non-incest slash from the SPN fandom:)

And we hightly encourage self-reccing here -- heck, sometimes that's the only way we ever hear about great fic. Bring it on!

just the tip of the top of my Merlin faves
Title: August
Author: Pru (rageprufrock)
Fandom: Merlin
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur
Summary: Arthur returns to Ealdor with Merlin to celebrate Hunith's birthday.
Link: August

Review: I am a complete sucker for motherless Arthur's relationship with his mother-in-law Hunith. He's so sweetly intentioned to do nice things for her just because she's Merlin's mother (and loves him), but he's so clueless about village life. Also? He and Merlin are so married.

Title: Polishing Buttons
Author: skellerbvvt
Fandom: Merlin
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur
Summary: "Polishing buttons doesn’t mean what you think it means, unless it does, then it does, with bells on."
Link: Polishing Buttons

Review: Merlin is spectacularly clueless in this, while Arthur tries unsuccessfully to woo him--cleverly told through Merlin's naive POV. A hilariously adorable romance. As a bonus? Unlike in canon, medieval characters are actually medieval--marking time by candles, distrusting baths, etc.

Title: Misrule
Author: The Hoyden (thehoyden)
Fandom: Merlin
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur
Summary: "Arthur's countenance turned gleeful and he shouted to the hall, 'Merlin's the Maiden!'"
Link: Misrule

Review: During the Feast of Fools, Merlin discovers to his dismay that he's the "prettiest" Maiden they've had in years, which leads to a surprising amount of glee from the girls dressing him up, a very disturbing smile from Uther, and more attention from Arthur than he's ever given Maidens in past years. (Oh, really, it's just a delightful excuse to get Merlin in a dress. And Arthur's bed. :-)

Title: Lord Drake's Bequest
Author: pennyplainknits
Fandom: Merlin AU
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur
Summary: "To my great-nephew Arthur I bequeath Tintagel Distribution, wholly and without reserve, save for one condition. You must marry, and stay married, for a period of no less than six months."
Link: Lord Drake's Bequest

Review: This is a classic Harlequin, have-to-get-married plot, with the best friend who agrees to "help out." Of course everyone else figures out it's real before they do. Yum!

Title: The Kingdom of the Blaggers
Author: Zahra (hackthis)
Fandom: Merlin AU, crossover with Entourage and a little RPS
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur, Morgana/Gwen
Summary: Arthur moves to Hollywood to become a star in his own right, out from under his father's shadow. Merlin follows.
Link: The Kingdom of the Blaggers (2 more pages linked from first)

Review: There are so many other modern-day Merlin AUs I'm madly in love with, but most are WIPs. Here's one that's delightfully complete. Arthur's competitive relationship with his father, sibling rivalry with Morgana, and snarky banter with Merlin are all intact in modern California. Add in a fabulous Ari Gold as his new agent and some movies in the plot that I wish weren't fictional, and I'm a happy, happy camper.

I really must update my own rec site, I've read loads of good fics lately. Mostly from fandoms you've recced a lot though. Well, here's a couple you haven't:

Twist of Faith by Nomad1
"Season 1 AU. When someone else makes a grab for Page 47 at the same time as Sydney, Sloane's actions in response change everything." Gen, complete at 20 chapters.

Star Wars (since you asked for it):
Repercussions of Time by ZaraValinor
"From a dark and terrible future, Ben Skywalker goes back in time to stop his grandfather's fall into darkness." Gen, complete but I'm afraid it's posted in a forum. If anyone knows a proper archived version, please do tell... Also has a sequel, which I think I remember is also completed.

Whee! Thank you so much!

All the King's Horses by probeda.
Gen/het, epic-length, PG-13ish, hurt/comfort

Diego de la Vega (who is also Zorro, for those following along at home) is left in charge of his father's ranch just as bandit activity in the pueblo is getting out of control. A "superhero gets captured in his civilian persona" story that makes nice use of Diego's father issues.

Sherlock Holmes:

You Buy Bones by aragonite.
Gen, long, R-ish, with a very high creep factor (like, cutting up dead people and keeping them in your basement serial-killer kind of creepy).

At Dr. Watson's request, Inspector Lestrade & Scotland Yard find themselves investigating one of the more disturbing facets of the 19th century medical profession: resurrection men. Think black market organ harvesting, except more disgusting.

aragonite's one of my favorite Sherlock Holmes authors; she does a beautiful job with the Victorian time period, writes a wonderfully fleshed-out Lestrade and Scotland Yard contingent, and her Holmes and Watson, while not textually slashed, are definately of the platonic soulbondedness school of not-quite-slash-but-they-read-like-it-anyway.

Ooo, Zorro! Urm, how central to the story is the relationship? (Gen/het confuses me:)

Author: Mikkeneko
Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist
Pairing: Ed/Sciezcka, NC-17
Go here: http://www.greatestjournal.com/users/mikkeneko/6963.html
Summary: This particular boy happens to like... well, see title. Or rather, girls who can memorize and repeat alchemy texts at the best possible times.

Title: The Magical Mystery Hibiki Tour [epic length]
Authors: Jaelle & Orla
Fandom: Ranma 1/2
Pairings: Ranma/Akane, Ukyo --> Ranma, Ryouga --> Akane, ending in Ryouga/Ukyo; Background Nabiki/Tatewaki and various crossover matchups. Perhaps PG-13 to R
Go here: http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~jaelle/tourindex.htm
Summary: Ukyo & Ryouga hatch a plan to get their loves by taking advantage of Ryouga's lack of direction sense and beginning a romantic touring company. Lunacy of a Ranma 1/2 nature results. A good ensemble fic as well as a romance. Various cameos from other anime abound.

Title: In Which the Acting Chancellor-Elect Considers the Advantages of Utilizing an Assistant, for the Advancement of the Kingdom in General and the Betterment of All Concerned [medium length]
Author: Shay Sheridan
Fandom: Kyo Kara Maoh
Pairing: Gwendal/Guenter*; PG-13 *Can't manage the umlaut :(
Go Here: http://www.chezshay.net/stories/Chancellor.html

Yin's x-over fics
So, for some reason my brain went "hey, didn't you read that fandom made up of one author that one time and declare it cracktastically epic?" I haven't read these fics in, y'know, a couple years (bookmarks lost in one or another computer crash) but they are awesome.

The basic premise is "what failed series/bad sci-fi movies have Joe Flanigan and David Hewlett been in?"

The first series is Sherman's March (Flan the Ad Exec!), crossed over with SGA, and later Slings and Arrows (Paul Gross! Shakespeare! *faints*).

Title: The Accident!verse series (http://yin-again.com/xoindex.htm)
Author: Yin_again (yin-again.com)
Fandom: Sherman's March/SGA/Slings and Arrows xover
Pairing: Pete/Rodney, McKay/Sheppard, Pete/Geoffrey

Told from the view of Pete Sherman, it is the story of Pete and Rodney, two exiles in Carolina. Takes place after Rodney gets back from Siberia, but before he joins the Atlantis expedition. Continues on with the further adventures of Pete after Rodney takes the Atlantis job, ending in his eventual move up to Ontario in the second series in the 'verse, No Such Thing as a Planned Happenstance, and meeting Geoffrey Tennant aka Paul Gross the Insane Shakespearean Actor.
I love Yin's fics because they work, they really do, and while they may have some angst in the middle there is always a happy ending. She makes crackfic not crack.

The second series is First Monday (Flan the Law Nerd!), SGA, and Boa vs. Python (feat. sweaty!Hewlett).

Title: The Snakes and Lawyers 'Verse
Author: Yin_again
Fandom: First Monday/SGA/Boa vs. Python xover
Pairing: Lodge/McKay, McKay/Sheppard, Lodge/McKay/Sheppard, Lodge/Emmett, Lodge/Emmett/McKay

This one has yet another Sheppard look-alike, law clerk Julian Lodge. He comes to Atlantis to prepare for the arrival of his boss, the Supreme Justice, who is being debriefed on Atlantis. He has a fling with McKay, which opens Sheppard's eyes, which leads McKay to make an interesting suggestion (see above pairings list). Afterwards Julian meets Dr. Emmett (McKay look-alike) back on Earth, and isn't scared off by his massive snake Betty. :D

Anyone care for some Brokeback Mountain recs?

The only story that I keep going back to again and again just so happens to be one of the first BBM fics I have read.

Title: A Love Born From Steel
Author: MaineWriter
Pairing: Ennis/Jack
Summary:Basically this is an AU with a totally different ending that the movie. First of all Jack lives *yay* Ennis gets a divorce and periodically meets up with Jack for the all popular fishing trip. Jack is at the point of loosing himself and Ennis tries to help out. I really don't want to give too much away but this story is what I compare others with that I read. MaineWriter goes into both of the characters life and deals with their children and other spouses.

And the next best thing it has a sequel as well :D

Through a Veil of Time-A look of their years together through the years.
