A Guide to Being an Emotionally Stable, Independent Young Man: By Terry Beaumont, Jedi Master, for Jack Zimmerman, Padawan

Review:

Note: This story is told entirely from the perspective of the author's original character, Terry Beaumont. A basic knowledge of ice hockey and the NHL is helpful, but not required. The Bruins suck.

Terry Beaumont is kind of a dick. More specifically, he's a dick in the way most people are dicks: not deliberately cruel, but occasionally taking out our frustration or confusion on people who don't deserve it. Also like most people, he's a good person at heart and wants the best for the people he cares about.

There's a bit of a learning curve for our friend Terry. The Falconers organization is new, the players not yet settled in their roles, he's left his friends and home and girlfriend behind, and his pet rookie is gay. I'm not normally a fan of original characters being so central to the story, but what kept me invested was how Terry handled all of what he'd been thrust into. Some of it he managed with grace. Others, with ham-handed clumsiness. But even at his most asshole-ish, you never lose sight of the good-heartedness inherent to his character. He grows in fits and spurts and with his fair share of growing pains, but his characterization never feels anything less than genuine.
