As the Enterprise begins her voyage, Jim Kirk tries to deal with the loneliness of being a Captain. Luckily, he's got Spock to help.

It took me a few tries to get into this story, mostly because of the characterization of Jim Kirk. I'm used to reading him as the strong but silent type, or even the out-and-out cocky bastard that everybody loves, not the slightly-broken and profoundly lonely man he is in this fic. That's why, I think, it's one of the most satisfying reads I've had in a while.

The author does an amazing job of juxtaposing the silly and the serious in this story without leaning too far on either side. Spock, in particular, is a constant source of glee for me, if not just because of the playful possessiveness he exudes throughout the series, and the affection that grows between them because of this is toe-curlingly good. Jim, in his turn, is a study in insecurities and misunderstandings, often assuming the worst before all the cards have been laid on the table and intensely affected by memories from his past.

I can't go into everything this series offers, of which there is a lot, but if you have the time or the inclination to read about a more vulnerable Jim or a more emotional Spock, I definitely recommend this series.
