Author's Summary: It might be good to be the king, but some days it sucks to be the prince.

Arthur's sent out to investigate some poisoned livestock, and Merlin comes along.

This story has humor mixed with more serious moments, danger forcing a magic reveal, and Merlin and Arthur both holding their own as they snark at one another. I've enjoyed stillane's work when she's writing a drama like the more recent To Have Outlived the Night (Teen Wolf), also recced here, but she's great at writing comedy too. It's here in Arthur's deadpan observations as he puts up with goats, peasants and Merlin.

There are nine dead goats and six miraculously not-dead goats waiting for them, along with an extremely cheerful shepherdess.

“Those goats aren’t dead,” Merlin points out completely unnecessarily the second they’re off their horses.

“Nope,” the shepherdess says, and beams at him. If the way she’s eyeing Merlin is any indication, they don’t get many fresh men through here.

Arthur waits a moment for more, but beaming seems to be all that’s on offer.

There's emotional drama as well; Arthur says something almost unforgiveable about Will that hits Merlin hard, and then there's a brush with death and coming to terms with Merlin's magic. I loved Arthur's speech about when he made his choice.

This was posted in 2009 and only has spoilers through season 1, episode 4.
